Anthony de Jasay

Anthony de Jasay was born in Aba, Hungary and is one of the most important and leading social philosophers of our age. He began his education in Budapest, where he obtained a degree in agriculture. However, de Jasay left Hungary after the communist takeover in 1948. After two years in neighboring Austria, he immigrated to Australia where he completed his studies in economics. Winning a Hackett Studentship he went on to Oxford University and taught there from 1955 to 1962, and published countless papers in prestigious scientific periodicals such as the "Economic Journal" or the "Journal of Political Economy". In 1962 de Jasay moved to Paris and worked there as an investment banker until his retirement in 1979. He has since been an independent scholar and lives in Normandy, France. Prof. Anthony de Jasay's massive oeuvre is a comprehensive intellectual defense of individual liberty. His major and most influential publications include The State (1985), Social Contract, Free Ride (1989), Choice, Contract, Consent (1991), Against Politics (1997) and Justice and Its Surroundings (2002). Several of his books have also been published in French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Turkish and Hungarian translations. A collection of his German essays has been published by the ECAEF, Studien zur Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftsordnung.
